Our FAQs

Physical Therapy is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all of the nerves of the body.

The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body. We help the body return to the self-regulating state.

Physical therapy is a healthcare specialty focused on improving mobility, function, and quality of life through various treatments and exercises. It addresses a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains, strains, and fractures, as well as chronic conditions like arthritis and lower back pain.

While commonly associated with the spine, the pinched nerve (compressive lesion) is actually rare but can happen in a car accident. Researchers suggest that only 10% to 15% of spine related problems are caused by direct pressure of bone and nerve tissue! This can result in numbness, burning, or a “pins and needles” feeling.
More frequently, after an accident, muscles are tight and change how the spine moves and can cause segmental dysfunction. This is seen often in whiplash by a loss of spinal curve, malfunctioning joints.
Technically, a disc can’t “slip.”

The intervertebral disc is a thick, dense cartilage-type material between 2 vertebrae. Each disc serves as a connector, spacer, and shock absorber for the spine. Healthy discs help allow normal turning and bending.

Trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to tear, bulge, herniate, or worse, rupture. This can be quite painful, as the soft center of the disc leaks, putting pressure on the adjacent nerve roots and spinal cord.

While results cannot be guaranteed, many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills, by choosing to come to us for their disc-related health problem.
Physical therapists use a combination of techniques such as manual therapy, exercise programs, modalities like ultrasound and electrical stimulation, and patient education to restore movement and reduce pain. They also play a crucial role in post-surgical rehabilitation, helping patients regain strength and range of motion after procedures. Additionally, physical therapy can assist in managing neurological conditions such as concussions, stroke, spinal cord injuries, and Parkinson's disease, enhancing balance, coordination, and functional independence. The goal of physical therapy is not only to treat current impairments but also to prevent future injuries through personalized care plans tailored to each patient's specific needs and goals.

After a car accident, a common interference to the nervous system is the 24 moving bones of the spinal column. A loss of normal motion or position of these bones can irritate or impair the function of the nervous system. This can disrupt the transmission of controlling nerve impulses. With improved spinal function there is often improved nervous system function.

After reviewing your history and discussing your specific problem, a thorough orthopedic and neurological examination is performed. X-rays or MRIs may be taken to uncover structural and functional problems associated with the spinal column. These examinations help identify areas of spinal malfunction and resulting nervous system deficit.

After a car accident, the typical patient receives 2 to 4 months of treatment. It can be more or less depending on many factors such as severity, pain level, adhering to the treatment plan, and are you post surgical? Once you have recovered to your pre-injury condition, your treatment will end.
