Pre and Post Surgery Physical Therapy
Physical therapy treatment before surgery can improve surgical outcomes and reduce complications. Following surgery, we help to restore strength and function, reduce pain and swelling, and help prevent re-injury.
Pain Can Make Mundane Tasks Strenuous
Pain Can Make Mundane Tasks Strenuous
When you’ve been in an accident, pain can disrupt your everyday activities. Even mundane tasks can become too strenuous. If your injury does not seem to be improving on its own, you may need surgical intervention. Before your insurance will approve a referral to a surgeon, they often want to see if you can recover with interventions like physical therapy. That’s where we come in! We can work with you to strengthen your body and overcome any functional limitations. An honest evaluation of your progress will help us determine whether you will improve fully on your own, or if surgery might be your best option.
If that is the case, we will coordinate care with your surgeon’s office. After your surgery, you may experience muscle atrophy and joint stiffness if not properly treated. We will follow the post-surgical protocol that is provided by your surgeon, so we can get you back to your old self. We also provide tips to manage pain, so that you don’t have to rely so heavily on pain medications.
Whether you’re preparing for the possibility of surgery, or are working your way back from it, we will be by your side, helping you know what to expect with each step of the recovery process.

Pre and Post Surgery Evaluation and Treatment

Assessment and Education
Using a comprehensive evaluation, we assess your physical condition, strength, range of motion, pain levels and limitations. Together, we’ll discuss expectations and set goals before or after surgery to create a personalized treatment plan for you. We will provide you with a home exercise program to continue to make consistent improvements.
Structured Therapy/Sessions
Starting with gentle range of motion exercises and pain management techniques, we will gradually introduce strengthening exercises as tolerated. As you gain more strength, we’ll focus on improving balance and performing functional, daily activities without difficulty.
Maintenance and Prevention
After surgery, we’ll develop a long-term exercise and activity plan to maintain the gains achieved during therapy. We’ll discuss proper body mechanics, posture and techniques to avoid future injuries. With periodic check-ins, we’ll monitor progress and adjust the exercise plan as needed.

Regain Your Independence

Regain Your Independence
If you skip the physical therapy component, either before or after surgery, you can expect a prolonged recovery time, possible chronic pain, decreased mobility, or complications that might necessitate additional surgeries. We don’t want that for you! We know that if you adhere to the doctor’s recommendations and attend regular physical therapy sessions, you will have a more successful recovery marked by reduced pain, faster restoration of strength and mobility and improved function. We’ve seen the vast difference in the outcomes for our patients.
